Now , 5 weeks after i have got back , i have decided to write my last blogpost.
So on my last day, my amazing family made me that pancake breakfast which i had so enjoyed! I packed a little bit more, and then we took Jane and went to a place near Rock Creek ( forgotten the actual name), was called something lik the 'Great Falls', but were really just little rapids. haha not so 'great', but very pretty. Then we went out for a lovely last lunch, and my whole family was laughing at my because i ordered a salad with fruit in it. Got home at 3:15 and had a wild dash to get everything packed because we had to leave by 3:45! was SO stressful, weighing bags and trying to get them to the right weight. The McGullivaries who lived next door had dropped off a present for me. It was a beautiful Dylan's Candy Bar bag filled with treats from Dylan's Candy Bar! it was amazing because they knew i was sad i didnt get there while i was in New York! So that was amazing. Finished packing, loaded up the car and went to pick up Jeffrey and Jane. A few delays at their house, but eventually we were on our way with Sophie, Alex, Edith, Jeffrey, Jane and me. Arrived at the airport to a completely empty queue (we were very late) and checked in. Then had to say goodbye to these amazing people i had lived with for a month. It was devastating! so sad.
When we eventually made our way into the actual airport we had to SPRINT down to our boarding gate (the furtherest one away, of course) because they were already doing last calls. (but we stopped for our last starbucks, naturally.).
Made it on to the plane (whew!). Made friends with the americans sitting behind us. And then we were off! Leaving the USA :(. Had the same flight back, stopping in Dakar again. I hardly slept, but it went so quickly! Landed in Joburg, and was so weird to here South African accents. had a very quick supper before we boarded our next plane, which was the LONGEST flight ever. We landed in Cape Town, which was SO exciting, and got all our luggage, except Jane's tennis racquet and hockey stick (Jeffrey had it shipped separately in Washington). Eventually we were the last ones left in the airport, and the conveyer belt stopped. An airport man person came and helped us, and it had not been put on the flight, so it would be sent over the next day. With that we gathered what we had, and left the airport. Our AMAZING friends, (Pip, Nicole, Jess and Michaela) were waiting with a banner for us!! (this is 10:30pm by now!) it was so great to see them.
Also very nice to see my family! but according to Andrew, they were "over me".
As we were leaving the airport there were a group of people ("a trade union, must be" - mother) who were singing and dancing african music ("their leader must be coming from somewhere" - mother) which was fantastic to hear!
So so nice to be in my own bed.
Looking back, the exchange was the most AMAZING experience ever. I only wish i had been there for longer. I didnt get homesick at all, but now ALL i want is to be back there, with everyone.
It really was absolutely incredible.
Thank you all <3

The last day of school.
Such a sad day! i cant believe i am leaving these people.
My spanish class through me a 'fiesta' which was so sweet. that has been my favourite (favorite) class. Even though they are mainly grade 9s, they have been so so friendly. We had music, and everyone brought food (incl the teacher) and we took photos and stuff. it was so so sad !:( I gave them bangles and stuff.
Then chemistry and photography were sad, but the goodbyes werent bad.
Then algebra was sad, because that class is also really great! we gave them s.a brooch thingys. Nice teacher as well.
English was a non - event, and then environment was sad, mainly for the teachers though. Earlier in the day we found Mr Sahr (he is amazing) and gave him a scarf, soweto string quartet cd and an african pen. He was so so sweet, and said if he ever comes to cape town ('his dream to bring students there') he will get hold of us, and if we ever come back to DC, we must let him know and we can meet his family. He is so sweet.
Then break, which was sad, because we sat with all these people we hardly knew (a few we did) and it was so sad to meet new people just before we left!
Homeroom was amaaazaing, our class had bought us Cathedral tshirts from the books store, which was so nice! it was very sweet.
We finished early, so we sat with Danya and Sloan who are freshmen in my spanish class, but two of the nicest people we met! they are incredible. I have to see them again, as well as everyone else we met!
Delia picked up Jane, Sophie and I and dropped Jane and I off at the Balkinds. We said our goodbyes to Francoise and Emma because they left for florida this evening. it was so sad!! but it was easier, because we knew we were going to see them next year. Then we came back here, and Alex took us and Sophie out for quick dinner (jane and i had sweet greens which is the salad place, it was so good!), and then we went to a movie. Alex jane and i saw contagion, and sarah came and wastched abduction with sophie and her friend. Contagion was so scary! but not like horror scary, just the whole idea behind it. it was about this virus that had broken out and it focused on how the disease spreads through contact. 'an average human touches his faces 2000-3000 times every day, 3-5 times every waking minute'. Which is true! so even though i was already a germaphob, my worries have increased by about 400. And i am going to an airport tomorrow! Although it was a really good movie!!
Then we came back and i packed my first bag at 12 hahah! Mum, you would be so proud of my packing! it was incredible i was so proud. i packed it so well, that it had space for more things but it was overweight. Well it was 23.2 kg? so i dont know whether that is too heavy. I am going to finish packing my other bag tomorrow, and then see if i can transfer stuff. Otherwise it will just have to do. It was packed so compactly! Im so proud ;).
Now it is 1am, and i am in bed. So weird to think that as i am typing this people in cape town are getting up and going to school! so weird.

two more nights.
Second last day of school. this is devastating.
in the Environment class, we have two teachers, Mr Sahr and Mrs Mattoon, (who's the like 'helper), and today was our last day with Mr Sahr, because he has an eye doctor appointment. That was the first of my goodbyes! so sad. Tomorrow me and jane are going to take an sa scarf and pencil thing and leave it with the secratery if we cant find him earlier, because he was our favourite teacher. he did so much for us.
Also had our last hip hop lesson, which was so so sad!! The people are absolutely incredible!! it is so so so sad.
Tomorrow is going to be so hard. saying goodbye, most likely forever, is so sad!! they are so nice. i hope i can see as many people again as i can.
Started packing. Well not really, but like making piles. aah i dont want to pack :( or leave!!!!

Third last day of school. Nooooo :(
After school we went to the National Air and Space Museum. There are loads of rockets and space shuttles and space things. it was really interesting, could have spend a lot longer there, andrew you would have loved it.
My absolute favourite thing was a picture that the Hubble Telescope had taken, like a depth field or something, where they left the lens open to absorb as much light as possible, and they got images from light that were 13 billion years old!! how cool is that. Ulti-nerd :D! but it was very very very cool!!!!!!!
Mother dearest, we have to bring andrew here he would love it. They have a whole lot of stuff about the wright brothers, and like theatres and stuff and all these different things.
and its freeeee.

Last day in NYC
Woke up and had a yummy hotel breakfast :)
Then set off for the Empire State Building. SO COOL. Did this 'fast track' thing where we watched a virtual tour of NYC, in one of those theatre where the seats move. Very cool. Then we waited like 10 minutes for the elevator up to the 80th floor, where they had a kind of musuem thing, with pictures and facts about the Empire State building, then we walked up the last 6 floors to the observatory, which is where you can go outside and take STUNNING pictures of New York. It is beautiful!
After this, (which was a few hours), Francoise and Emma went back to the apartment and Jeffrey, Jane and I went on a boat tour. We went up the Hudson river ( i think) and to the Statue of Liberty. Was fantastic to see NYC from the water. Was about an hour and a half. Caught a taxi back to the apartment, and then Emma, jane and i walked down to the Hersheys store (!!). Has sooo much chocolate. And huuuge bars!! so amazing though. Then we went to the I <3 NYC gift shop next door, and i spent waay to much money. (i love you dad).
Then, very sad, caught a taxi to Penn station, (next to Madison Square Gardens!!!) where we caught our train home. so saad :(. Long trip, almost 4 hours!
Nice to be home. So so sad to leave NYC! :( and almost DC.
Only 5 more days here. It is unbelievabley sad:(

NYC
woke up at 9 and emma jane and I had breakfast in the hotel and met Jeffrey and we walked to Rockefellar Plaza, which is awesome. Bought tickets for the 11:45 NBC studio tour, so had like an hour, so we wondered around, went into H and M and bought a blazer. Also went into a cathedral (st patricks or peters i think?). Alsooo went to Teuscher Chocolatier, amazing.!!
Then we went to the NBC studios for our tour. It started off in a movie theatre which showed how NBC started. Then we got to go into all these studios which have different shows. we went into where they film all these different news programs. Then we went into Dr Oz's studio, and then into Saturday Night Live's studio! It was so coooool. They were setting up all the sets, and practising the music. While im typing this im watching SNL (which is, obviously, live) and it is so cool to look at these people (Lady Antebellum and Melissa McCartney are both on tonight, ) and think that i was there earlier! Then we went into how they do the make up and masks for SNL, which was awesoooome. If they dont get the masks and make up applied in the given time (usually 20 seconds, ) they have to cut to commercial and they lose $250 000 !! After SNL we went into this smaller studio, where we got a photo taken behind the anchor desk, and then we all sat down in the seats in the 'audience'. Our tourguide person asked for 2 volounteers who could read at a 5th grade english level, so me and this other woman volountered. i was assigned the news, and she had to do the weather. So I got to sit behind the anchor desk and do like a legit news report thing! with the subtitle things and stuff! and then the other lady did the weather. it was really hard!! they told us afterwards it was broadcast live to the NBC cafe! hahahahaha. We got the dvd though :P
We finished on the tour, and then looked around the gift store. it is so cool, all the shows the have on they have so many gifts for. So Friends and stuff had a whole lot of things about it. AAAAAND for chuck, they had BuyMore tshirts!!!!!!!!!!! so cool.
After the tour had finished we went to the Conergie Deli for lunch, which was really nice. fantastic (huge) sanwiches, and something called egg creams, which someone told us were amazing, but i didnt like. Ate with Jeffreys sister in law, harriet.
Then we took the metro down to SoHo, which is an area with loooads of nice streets. So we did some shopping :) which was fantaaaastic, hardly bought anything though. Then we caught a taxi back to our hotel, where we had an hour to get ready for wicked, and relax a bit. We got dressed, and then went out to supper at a french bistro down the road, which was really nice.
THEEEEEN we went to WICKED!! in the gershin theatre. it was absolutely beyond words. The sets were amazing, as were the costumes. The costume changes were so good, and everything was beautiful! The acting and dancing was absolutely brilliant.. and then the SINGING, the singing was absolutely incredible!!! it was so so so so so good. i would watch that show a hundred times over. it was absolutely beautiful. The singers range was increeedible!
After the show we came home, and are now watching some SNL.
I dont want to leave NYC! it is so beautiful! i love it here. (MUM WE HAVE TO COME BACK!)

new york new york new york
NEW YORK!
well first school which was fuun,
then Jeffrey and Francoise picked up Jane , Emma and me and took us to union station. waited in a looong line. a bit of drama about bags and time and stuff, but then we were on the train and all sorted!!
Train ride passed through philadelphia, baltimore, new jersey.. and other.. very cool
Then we arrived in NEW YORK!!!!
so exciting. Came out and jeffrey tried to hail his own taxi while the rest of us waited in line for the taxi rank. So exciting to be awake!! caught a taxi to our hotel, which is really nice! emma, jane and i have our own room, and Francoise and jeffrey are staying accross the road in an apartment. We all shower and got dressed for supper.
Walked down broadway street, passed mamma mia, wicked, and all these other amazing shows!! Had supper at Stardust which was increeedible! all the waitors sing and dance on tables. its so lively and fun. yummy food too! Then we were supposed to go up the empire state building so we started walking through time square (which is just incredible. so many billboards and so bright!!) but because it is POURING we decided not to go up the empire state building. So we went to the forever 21 store in times square. It is amaaaazing!!! it is 4 stories underground. and the floors are absolutely HUGE!!! It had amazing clothes, but none of it was really my style so i didnt find much, but jane and emma loved it! It was incredible. Then we were getting a bit tired so we looked at our clocks and it was midnight!! the shop is so well lit you have no idea of time. it stays open until 2 oclock. When we walked out, it was nothing like midnight. Becuase of all the lights, the sky looked like sun set ish, but so many people were walking around!! it was like cpt in the day. and everything was still open of course.
It was stilll pouring and we were all soaking so we came back and now we are trying to warm up.

Aaah i love my spanish class. fantastic first period! The teacher is amazing.
In chemistry, we have these little 4 mark 'quizs' all the time.!
And my Environment teacher is amaaazing as well, he is so sweet! Mr Sahr!
Had Yoga after school wooo it was tiring. ahhaa but good. Then jane came home with me (after stopping at starbucks :D, double chocolatey chip frappuchino with whipped cream. 500 times better than frios!!). Then Edith took us (at 7) to see Fahrenheit 451 (or some other numbers), which is a play based off a book that was written about a future society in which books are banned. Good, but kinda confusing. just came home and have got to read SO MUCH macbeth... maaaybe because i havent been doing my macbeth homework.. but they get an unbelievable amount of homework!

Field Trip!
Field Trip todaaaay!!
Had first period (Spanish). My teacher is amazing!! shes so so funny!!
Then went to the yellow bus (!!!!) with my environment class :). Drove to the solar decathlon. it was really good!
There are about 20 houses that have been designed and constructed by college students. They are all affordable, comfortable and completely green. Its focused on solar stuff, so getting energy net balance to zero or below. It is so so interesting!! there are these proper houses set up, and some of them are being sold afterwards. It was all so so clever.
Then went to chipotle for lunch (YAAAY SO DELICIOUS!!!). Theeen we went to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) , because one of the girls in my class's dad is some high position. So we got to go into the WWF and he gave us a talk about climate change and stuff, so interesting!
Then went back in the yellow bus back to NCS, and had hip hop whoooop. Went home with Jane and had supper with her and Francoise. Francoise is absolutely hilarious! love her so much!!

Then went back in the yellow bus back to NCS, and had hip hop whoooop. Went home with Jane and had supper with her and Francoise. Francoise is absolutely hilarious! love her so much!!

Mt Vernon
Woke up feeling much better :) yay. just extremely sore throat now.
Went and watched the last few minutes of Emma and Sophie soccor match at Sidwell Friends before Francoise and Jeffrey took Jane, me, Emma and Sophie to Mt Vernon. about a 40 minute drive. Mt Vernon is George Washington's house. Its been made into a museum thing with lots of parts. Fairly interesting. Didnt go through all of it though. On the way home Jeffrey dropped Jane and I and Sophie at the Apple store. we asked the guy about why we should have a mac and stuff to convince our parents (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). Came home and attempted Mario Kart with Jane. we were terrible. The Bredenkamps and I went to a mexican food place for supper, Cactus Cantina. Very yummy :)

HOMECOMING DANCE :)
after waking up and feeling so sorry for myself, i went back to sleep and woke up at 1pm. Lay in bed for another like 3 hours, until it was time to go to the teachers talent show! Was hilarious. the teachers put on a talent show for the argentina and chile chorale trip, to raise funds. Some sang, others attempted stand up comedy, was all very funny.
Then went back to the halloween store (which is terrifying) and took photos!! jane met us there, and we came back to our house to get ready for the daance. I was feeling much better by this stage :)
So we went to the dance, and the first half an hour was honestly the most awkward half an hour of my entire life. me and jane didnt know what to do with ourselves.
But theeen it got so much fuuuun :) it was absolutely fantastic!! i had so much fun. Didnt want to leave, it ended at 11. The poor chaperones that had to watch out for 'inappropriate dancing', there was quite a lot hahah. It was so hot in the room thought, within a few minutes everyone was soaked.
but overall it was such a fun night.

PURPLE AND GOLD DAAAAY!
purple and gold daaay :) most people say it is one of the best days of the year! WHOO :).
So everyone arrived at school in their cathedral wear. i wore my yde dress and stockings :) Then we had cathedral which is so much better than springfields chapel. it was an hour, and it went so quickly! had it in the 3 court gym, because the cathedral is still being repaired.
Then we trekked back up to the Hearst building to get dressed into our purple (or gold!!). Me and jane got dressed into the fantastic purple colour (they are kind of like houses). I wore my purple tights, shorts, purple tshirt, purple fishnet gloves, and these incredibley sexy (no) purple wig we found at target!
So then we went down to the athletic centre (again) to do all the rotations. So how it worked was you would go around in your grades to all the different stations.
So first our grade went to shaving cream twister and tug of war. They had set out about 10 twister mats and sprayed them in shaving cream. and it was about 2 or 3 purple against the same amount of gold on each mat. very funny because it was so slippery! Tug of war was going on for the other people. my hands are so sore.
Next we went to the Schifter gym where we had a funny race thing, that you had to run accross the gym and had to put on these clothes while we were running and then pose for a photo and take off the clothes on the way back.
Then we went to musical chairs which was so great!! Then we went to the first court in the 3 court gym where we did three legged and wheelbarrow races. i think me and jane broke eachother in the 3 legged race.
Then we went to giant dodgeball which was soo fun!! lots of running around, and about 20 balls!!
Went BACK TO THE HEARST building to get dressed for music day!
Music day is just all the grades and different lcubs and sports doing skits. was hilarious! (although had to walk back to the athletic centre. this entire time it had been boiling and raining. i dont like it.) Our grade (grade10) did a song "you make my dreams come true" by Hall and Oats, but some of the lyrics were changed, and dances were going on and stuff. Some skits were singing, others are talking. very funny!
Then we finished that with the seniors announcing the theme for the year (and the homecoming dance tomorrow). It was warriors :/
After school Delia took Sophie, Jane and I to a halloween store in Friendship Heights. It was so cool! these stores rent out space for two months a year, and they have every single costume available!! and loads of scary things to put around your house at halloween!
I bought a cleopatra dress costume thing for the dance. everyone dresses up and it isnt that smart or formal. (i dont know if mine is warrior enough). Jane is using a blue dress she has, and she bought greek accessories, like a leaf tiara and bangle thing. It looks fantastic!
We got some more froyo (not as much this time!!) and then delia picked us up. We went home (along with alex) and watched the mentalist season premiere. WAAAA it was fantastic!!
Then we went to the homecoming volleyball game, which was good, but we lost :(, close though!
Then came home and played Hit and Miss. which is so fun! Then jeffrey came to pick up jane from our house, and had someone for me to meet, a person who wants to sail to SA from mauritius. then he took me home with them (?) and i ended up just sitting with emma and jane while he showed them photos. Then came home..
Feeling siiick now. all coldey. everyone has been sick at school, so it is not unexpected but it SUCKS. i cant be sick for the dance tomorrow!!

Beauty and the Geek day today. Me and Jane didnt dress up haha :) Outfits were very funny though!
Normal school day. After school Jeffrey picked Jane and I up (after rehearsing with our class for the music day skit!!!) and we went to the world bank. they are a whole lote of very importatn meetings going on at the moment, and very important conferences. So jeffrey took us into one of the rooms. we immeditaly felt out of place because they were all obviously very professional people. There was a really elongated oval table in the middle with all the important people seated around it, and they used microphones to speak to eachother. then around the walls of the room there were people sitting watching. so it had started when we arrived, so jeffrey took us inside past people etc, and then to the on side of the rectangle room. there was an empty table behind us, so we just stood awkwardly. but he told us to sit on it, so all three of us sat on it for about 3 minutes, before i think someone leaned forward a bit. and the table tipped and we all fell of onto the floor. this is not an exageration. Everyone in the room turned to look at us. some of the bored people looked very amused. it was so humilating though!!
Then we looked a bit more around the office. 10 000 people work there,or something ridiculous like that.
Came home, jane came to our house, and we watched bridesmaids with alex. it was hilarious!!
Music day and spirit day tomorrow :D woo!

The Cheesecake Factory.
School today was around the world wednesday. me and jane took flags :) (mother they came in handy!)
Our Environment teacher is so sweet! we are talking about environmental policy, and today he told us that no where in the USAs constitution does it mention the environment. Then (because jane and i are in the class) he did a whole slide about the SA constituition. Apparently it is a very forward thinking constituion! with a whole lot of clause things about protecting the environment, and sustaining it! So yeah, go SA! :).
After school me and Jane walked down to something sweet and got a cupcake and a starbucks drink :D woo!!
Then we had hip hop . it was terrible i cant do it!
Then Jeffrey picked us up and he had to go some shop or the other, so Jane and I went to starbucks again, and the Cheesecake Factory! it was delicious! me and jane shared a piece of white chocolate caramel macadamia cheesecake! so good. Then came home to quiche. going to have to have so much gym when i get back.
Watched the 3rd season premiere of modern family. SO GOOD :)
So fantastic day. i have so much reading of macbeth to do!

Dynamic Duo Day
Today was twosome tuesday / dynamic duo :). Me and jane went in our springfield sports uniform. not that exciting but yeah :)
My favourite outfit of the day was two of the girls in my grade dressing up as Luigi and Mario. They were so good and creative! One of the girls I have two classes with, she is called Colly. Something exciting happened today.. she said JA! like afrikaans ja! I have been rubbing off on her, it is very exciting :).
After an extremely exhausting yoga session, Jane came home to my house. we (attempted) to do homework for a while. Alex took us to Chipotle for supper!! It was just us 3 because everyone else had various things until later. It was delicious!
You start at the beginning and order a burrito, tacos, bowl or whatever . then you add from the following: chicken, steak, some spicey beef stuff, pork, binto (pinto?) beans, black beans, rice, fried onions and peppers. Then you move onto the next station where you can choose between mild / medium / hot salsa, guacamole, sour cream, cheese, lettuce etc. Then you choose your drink and pay.
It was delicious! No ways we could finish it though. even though it isnt that big it is very heavy!! So yummy supper.
Then came home and watched season premiere of GLEE!! :D :D which was brilliant.
Because this is the beginning of a new season, there were lots of seasons premiering tonight. the americans have noticed that if they have long commerical breaks between the end of one seaoson and the beginning of the next, people leave. So they are no breaks between each show! so i ended up watching 3 shows. hahaha.
so that was my day. :)

Good day at school. Got my spanish quiz back .. i got 98 percent! whoo!
It was Mars Monday today. I wore like a bright blue shirt and shorts and this very nice girl called Erin lent me bright yellow neon leggings, and i wore a tinfoil headband! whoop whoop! Some people go all out and others dont dress at all.
Everyone is so nice :).
At like 8 pm today Edith took me and Sophie to a Target. IT WAS AMAZING! they have EVERYTHING! and apparently walmart is even bigger. It is insane . I bought some stuff for purple day on friday (im a purple) and i bought a Hersheys chocolate bar (not as bad as everyone said) and a present for Emily and Andrew. I know, buying classy presents from Target. hahaha.
They hyave all their halloween costumes out, and you can literally buy anything! you can buy costumes that if you hold the reins up in front you are a pink horse, or a garden gnome, or a dinosaur. Literally anything! i was so tempted to buy one, but it was only for toddlers!
Tomorrow is dynamic duo day, so jane and i are going in the springfield sports uniform. not that exciting but yeah :) some people are going as like Mario and Luigi!
I cant remember if i have said this, but everyone uses macs here. And the grade 7s do some lessons on ipads!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D

Second full Sunday
Woke up to the tradition of 'crepes' on sunday. ITS FANTASTIC (mum we HAVE to do this!). The Bredenkamps have crepes with nutella, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, bananas and that cream in a bottle thing. it is delicious!! :D The cream has a special lid that you squirt out. it is very cool. Delicious breakfast.
Then went to Sophie and Emma's soccer match, which was good. Got a bit sunburnt. Came back and their was a pool party for all the people on Sophie's soccor team. YUMMY BURGERS at the 'barbeque'.
Lauren was online on skype so I got to speak to her (YAY!!) and my parents, which was lovely :).
I then attempted to do my essay (which failed.)
Went to the St Albans picnic thing for families. Not that exciting. (apart from the beautiful beautiful school). Talked to Sarah and Sophie about how a JERSEY was made from wool and was not a t-shirt with a number on it for football. hahah translations here are the funniest.
Then came home , procrastinated for as long as possible, but just finished my essay!! WOO!!Conservation vs Preservation. yeeeah.
Now so tiiired. I am always so tired!! But it is better than being bored :).

First full Saturday
I woke up especially early (8:30!!!!!!) to go to the Balkinds and call my family. so nice to speak to them! (first time i spoke to any of them!)!. Jeffrey picked me up on a motorbike.
Then Francoise, Jane and I went into DC. We took the metro, and arrived at the Mall which was beautiful. We bought tickets to one of those hop on hop off buses for the day.
All the museums are free! I didnt go into any of them, but all these beautiful National galleries and museums are free! Its so weird, but so great.
We got on the bus and drove past the Capitol and a few museums (Natural History, American History, Air and Space, Gallery of Art) before we got out at Union Station which is a lovely grand station in DC, and had lunch. It started to drizzle, so we got on the next bus and decided to stay on it, and get an idea of the city. So we stayed on it as we drove past amazing sites! Back past the Capitol and the National Mall, past the Washington Monument, Tidal Basin, Jefferson Monument, Korean War Veterans Memorial, FDR memorial (which we didnt actually see, as it is small apparently), The Lincoln Memorial and then down to Arlington. We then went back up from Arlington and decided to get out at the Lincoln Memorial and looks around. So we took photos inside that, (which is that round building with pillars, and a gaint statue of Abraham Lincoln sitting in a chair. We also took a photo of the Gettysburg Address inscribed in the wall, and of where Martin Luther King Jnr stood when he said his I have a Dream speech. Which was amazing! And the view from there is amazing. The Washington Monument (which is that really long tall thing that kinda looks like a pencil), and Mall and Capitol all line up perfectly. I was so excited to see that view you always see in movies with that body of water in front of the Washington Monument, but they were renovating so it was just mud.
We then walked to Vietnam War Memorial. Which was so so moving. It is this wall thing put in grass (Im not desrcibing this fantastically) but it is all the names of the people who died. They are somthing like 58 000 names in it. It is incredible. You can ask one of the people who work there for the placement of a particular name, and they will use their map thing and find it for you. Then they give you a piece of paper and a piece of graphite, and, because the names are dented in, if you colour over the name it comes up on your piece of paper. Francoise was talking to someone, and I noticed a man standing and reading every single name on the wall to try and find his friend. He had a lanyard around his neck that said 'ww2 veteran'. (maybe not WWII? but definitely was a veteran for some war.) So i just stood and watched him for ages trying to find this name. someone came up to him and offered to look up the name for him, but he said he knew it was on the 4th or 5th panel, and it was fine, he would find it. He just stodd there for ages, tracing all the names, finding his one. i couldnt leave; i had to wait and see if he found it. It was amazing when he did, he was so happy! It really was so nice. I went up to him and offered to get him graphite so he could trace it. Me and Jane traced the name for him. it was amazing seeing the name just appear on the page. It was like he was coming alive. the name was Richard R Herchcorn. After we had finished we gave it to him, and he was so happy. it was so beautiful. he told us that Richard was his cousin's son, and that he had gone to his funeral, and it was an open casket and he was dressed in his military uniform with his hand on his heart, and a bandage around his head. he started crying. it was so so touching. He was so grateful, and when he left me and Jane started crying. It really was so moving. It is an amazing exhibition, as the artist didnt want to glorify war, she wanted people to think about it. I definitely want to go back there one day. I will never forget that mans face and i dont even know his name. it was so touching.
After that we walked to the White House! Which wasnt much of an event. But i have seen the White House now, which is great. As we were walking back to the Metro, Jane spotted a FroYo, so we went there. Oh my. Along the side of the walls they have all this different types of frozen yoghurt and so many toppings, and you just put as much as you want in a cup and you pay by weight. it wsa delicious :D no ways we could finish it though. Our first experience of big American food. We walked to the metro, and got out at Bethesda (the shopping and restaurant part) where we went to the Apple Store!! :D :D And i put an ipod touch, and jane bought a nano! So cool :D very exciting.
We then walked back to Chevy Chase to the Balkinds (we did a LOT of walking), to pick up our stuff, and then we were dropped off at my house! (not walking this time!). We quickly had supper (pizza. butlers is still better) and then Hugh and Edith took Me, Jane, Alex, Sarah and Sophie to the movie theatre. Hugh and Edith saw The Help and we saw Crazy Stupid Love. It was really good! Had these irritating little boys and girls (grade 7ish) sitting in front of us talking the whole time, or taking photos on their iphones! very irritating.
Had such a huge shock when jane ordered a small coke from the movie theatre. It was bigger than our extra large. That is not an exageration. The width of it just fitted around my hands put together. It was so big!! and the larges!!!!! i cant even desrcibe how big they are. Me and Jane had a bit of a freak out session!! We cant believe everyone isnt obese!
After the movie we went to Haagen Daaz where me and Jane tried to share a small smoothie, but they only had one size! which was pretty large. Everyone else got their own chocolate or caramel ice cream thing! they are big! I dont understand how this family is so skinny!!
Whew. even though, apart from the smoothie, i didnt eat anything it feels like i did because of looking at everyone elses huge things! the size of cups and POPCORN!! dont get me started on popcorn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wow. amazingly fun day though! so exhausted now. It is 11:30 pm now, and everyone is still wide awake doing stuff! Alex is playing music, Sarah is on the guitar next door, Sophie is watching TV. aah its a nocturnal family :) Mom you would love it!
As im typing this the cat is snuggling in a ball on my lap. it is so cute!
Lots of love xxx

LETS SPEND SOME MONEY.
FRIIIDAAAY TODAY!!
i went shopping :D :D!
School was goooood. very nice lunch of mac and cheese. yummy!! Spanish test was average.
Me and jane have lunch at 1:30 till 2:20, and then 8th period is free till 3:15. So bascially we could leave school after we have had lunch , we arent required to stay. Every other day except friday we have sports, so today even though we could technically leave, we didnt because we were waiting for emma to finish at 3:30. So we were really bored, and we walked down to starbucks! how exciting is that?! it was awesome.
And then Francoise picked us up and took us to Georgetown!!! which is two main streets filled with expensive (and some not ) shops! WOO :D. We went into the apple store, which is abolutely incredible!! Didnt buy anything (dad be proud. but dont worry im going back on sunday).
Wandered around, going into different shops. Urban Outfitters is INCREDIBLE! its got all the stuff you want, but you never find?! I bought a backpack thing, and a t-shirt, and nailpolish :) . Then we went to Sephora, which is an amazing make up store!! got everything. I bought some foundation! we wandered around for a while longer going into other amazing shops, and then went to Baked and Wired which someone had suggested. the cupcakes were increeedible!
We then had supper with Francoise at a french bistro which was delicious, and then snuck into H and M just before they closed! I bought two tops and a jersey cardigan thing.
Georgetown was beautiful, so cooool! Francoise reminds me so much of Nana! their sense of humour (humor) and laugh is exactly the same!!
Great daaay :) I am going on a tour of DC tomorrow :) exciting!
ps. the best thing today was when Jane told someone she was from south africa, and the person said omg i know someone who lives there! do you know coco and roger?!?

Thursday.
The routine is so familiar now!
Introduction to Photography is really cool. We are using pinhole cameras with light sensitive photo paper inside to make negatives, and today we started learning how to process them to make positives! i hope we get to keep them, its so much fun.
All the grade 10 have "health and human sexuality" one day a week instead of english, so today was our day. talked about values and stuff..
Spent the environment class colouring a poster page in with pastels (pasTEEELS), today. so much fun :D about what nature is to us or something!
Had yoga again today. My goal is to be able to touch my toes by the time I come home. Jeffrey picked me up and I went to their house, (got starbucks!!!) and ended up staying for supper, (sorry, 'dinner'). Yummy! We talked about out NYC trip!! :D Leaving on the amtrak on friday the 30th of September at 3:30. Me, Emma and Jane get our own hotel room! :D WHOO!!
It got a bit colder today which was fantastic! Getting down to like 40 degrees fahrenheit tonight, which is 4 degrees celcius.. maybe not that cold, thats what Jeffrey said anyway! It is very cold though.
I have a biig spanish test tomorrow. Soo i have to study for that. even though i got home like 45 minutes ago and it is 10:15 here. uugh

well today was fun! Met some more people. learnt some more spanish.
Yo Estoy Aqui (I am here.)
my motherrr has told me to 'watch my language' on here, so no more 'darn its' for me ;). She has also told me not to use so many 'likes'.
Yeah like thats not going to happen, SORRY. :)
we also found out today we are going on a field trip in The Environment, today! we are going to the (something) decathalon on the National Mall, where people build green houses! And then CHIPOTLE FOR LUNCH! yay!
Had an interview with Miss How today, (works in communications) about how we like the school so far. She emailed Jeffrey later and said we were both 'delightful'. :D
I also had hip hop this afternoon. I really cant dance! Jane got all the steps immediatly, and i really didnt ! it was fun though! the people here are so nice.
Jane came for supper tonight. (Mom you will be so proud, while i am here i have had cooked salmon, an entire piece!!!!, and cooked tuna stuff. they eat a lot of fish. They cook it really nicely which is nice though :)).
Francoise is taking Jane, Emma and I shopping on friday (GEORGETOWN!) which is very exciting!!
And on saturday we are going to do some touristy stuff in DC.
Next week is spirit week, so everyone dresses up everyday of the week. I didtn bring dressing up clothes (obviously) so i dont know what to wear!! any help anyone?!
Monday - Mars Monday
Tuesday - Dynamic Duo (what can me and jane wear togther?)
Wednesday - Around the world wednesday
Thursday - beauty and the geek
Friday - Purple and Gold (kind like house colours?! me and jane are purple. Friday is like a spirit day!)
My family has the coolest thing EVERRR. There vitamins are like sweets! like fruit sweets! it is so so SO cool.

Second day of school (wow only?!)
i have so much homework. and i only got home at 7:30.
So today was great. Felt a bit more confident finding classrooms.
I had spanish. which was .. hmm... i didnt understand ANYTHING. i only got 'si' and 'gracias' and 'llamas' (which is name.)
So Me llama jen. I think!!
The americans say my name differently, so when i introduce 'hi im jen' they ALL say ' hey Jane!' and im like no JEN like JENNIFER JEN, and they are like 'oh! Gin?!' and then when i eventually get across to them Jane is like.. 'heey IM jane'. so it gets quite funny.
I bought an NCS sweatshirt thing today. (FIRST PURCHASE) and some pens. they have this like fully stocked shop in the school next to the amazing cafeteria.!
I had one of my 'drop days' today, so i went and got a 'to go' chocolate milk at the cafeteria. It is SO cool :D.
I had yoga after school today with jane. it was umm interesting. it was pretty cool though! relaxing, and the people were nice! maybe i will be flexible by the time i get home.
tomorrow is hip hop.. yes.
Yoga is in the athletic centre. The athletic centre is so cool. (i think i mentioned it before), but it is again, so so cool :).
I also had homeroom today. which was fun. it was only like 7 people, which was kind of nice to get to know them. we showed them jack parow!! it was hilarouis they were like?!?!?!?!. We are going to show them decent SA music on thursday, like parlotones and prime circle.
Today in english they had to write an in class essay, so i arrive and everyone is whipping out their macbooks!!!!! People take notes on their macs.
After Yoga, Jane and I went to watch Sarah's volleyball game. I WANT TO DO VOLLEYBALL SO BADLY!!!!!!!. It looks so fun. I didnt stay the whole time, i went home like half an hour early with Tracy (who lives next door and has twins, Tyler and Duncan in grade 11), so Tracy, Duncan and Duncan's friend, Sammy, who is english.(!!)
So i got home at 7:30. I then talked with Delia (the house keeper) until Sarah Alex and Sophie got back.. talked with them until supper and have now gone upstairs. It is 9:11.
These people have such a high work ethic. They are so studious!! Wow. everyone completes their homework so well. And they spend like 3 hours everyday doing sports. wow.
Well i am going to go do all my work then!! Stressful. A lot of woooork.
xxxx
ps. My mum sends me an email today and she writes all about her day and stuff, and at the bottom she says "I dont know whether you will recieve this or not, so i will stop here. Emily says your email address wont change in another country?!" hahahahahahhaaha (Mum i love you!!)

.. side note.
i will never ever again complain about Springfield's stairs. My timetable (Edith says) involves as much walking as is possible.
So Whitby building and Hearst building are the two buildings that have classes. I start in Hearst building on the 3rd floor. then i go all the way to the bottom and go to the Whitby building ( about a 4 minute walk). Then I go up to the 3rd floor. Then i come down and enter another building and go up to the 3rd floor. Then I got back to Whitby and, and back to the 3rd floor. (CAN YOU SEE HOW MUCH WALKING THIS IS ALREADY?!)
Then i go downstairs back 4 minutes to Hearst... and then walk up the stairs to the FOURTH FLOOR. Then I come all the way down and go back to the Whitby building to the 2nd floor. Then I walk back to Hearst for LUNCH :D. (which i have by now earned!!)
so . much . walking .
ps. wow my last post was long :)

First day of American High school.
early mornings. gaaah .
Hadnt really thought about school so wasnt that nervous. But I was when I got there. Freeeaking out.
So we arrived at school with Alex, Sarah and Sophie. Saw the national Cathedral. It is absolutely beautiful. So so so stunning. MAGNIFICANT.
Sophie and Alex went off to their classes, and me and sarah and Edith went to the cafeterai (MORE ABOUT THAT LATER!!!!!!! :D), and met up with Jane and Jeffrey.
Then wandered around for ages meeting teachers and stuff, until the person who organises our schedule came in. So this is my schedule
period 1 : Spanish 1c (For beginners, didnt have this today as we finished after the period finished)
period 2 : Chemistry ( So simple.omg. they havent even done elements yet.)
Period 3 : Introduction to Photography (SO COOL!!!!!!!!)
period 4: Algebra (they put us in like the dumb class. so it is really easy!!)
Period 5: English (very very very complicated.)
Period 6: The enviroment. (nothing really to do with enviornment, just loads of debates which will be really cool, like is genetic engineering morally correct and stuff)
peroiod 7: LUNCH!!!!!!!!!!! (Last lunch period of the day. at 1:30!! I WAS DYING OF HUNGER!!! everyone eats at different times.)
Period 8 changes everyday. So on monday it is chapel ( not really, it was just announcements and some singing). Tuesday and Thursday it is 'homeroom'. Wednesday and Friday is suppused to be stuff, but it isnt organised yet, so it is a free period!
Most people only take 5 subjects, so they all have a free period but i dont. Intro to photo is only 3 times a week though, so I have a 'drop day' on tuesdays and fridays. (which means I get a free period on those days).
So I have maths (MATH), The environment, and LUNCH with Jane. All the teachers and girls are SO amazing, so so so kind and friendly and welcoming. I cant even hear the accents anymore. Americans emphasise different syllables to us, and I am starting to speak like that! VERY WORRYING.
LUNCH. lets talk about LUNCH. LUNCH is amazing. AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING! They have this cafeteria thing, but with such amazing food! everything from salads, to cooked meals, to bagels, toast, spreads, fruit, pudding, EVERYTHING!! and there is a whole room just dedicated to drinks! So you go and there are about 10 different of those juice machines with stuff like juice, flavoured water, lemonade, chocolate milk (!!!), everything! It is absolutely delicious.
And then , inbetween classes you can just run into the cafeteria and grab 'Food to go". They have a section for that.
After school today me and jane wandered around the gymnasium with Edith. This gym is absolutlely mindblowing. It goes under the sports feilds, and it is like world class facilities. We have decided to do Yoga on tues and thurs, and Hip Hop on mon and wed (Janes influence. everyone is going to laugh at me). we werent allowed to do a competitive sport. I really wanted to do volleyball. Sports are a huge thing heree. Like when you get introduced its like ' this is jane, shes a big hockey and tennis girl, and this is jen asnd she is a huge crew girl' (im so glad it isnt rowing season, so i dont have to show how terrible i really am at 'crew'' (rowing)). So yes we are doing Hip Hop and Yoga. Most people would only do one, but we are doing two. I have yoga tomorrow. WISH ME LUCK!
After deciding on sports, Edith took us for a tour around St Albans (NCS's brother school. Alex goes there). IT IS SO BEAUTIFUL! It is all like modern with stones and glass and absoultely indescribable! They have just spent 83 million dollars renovating it... I know. so much money. But it is so so goregous.
THEN WE WENT TO A FOOTBALL GAAAAAME!!!!!!!! I was so excited because they had like the proper outfits and everything (It was just a school game at STA (St Albans)), but they had mascots and everything! So that was REALLY COOL. but then it was a bit of an anticlimax because it is so boring to watch. Each quarter is 12 minutes, but it takes like 40 minutes for a quarter because they have so many stops! It is unbelievable. So yeah, Alex says rugbyh is way more fun to watch, but you dont go to watch football, you go to socialize. So yeah. And then when we were leaving I saw a lemonade stand!! Like ones from movies with like 5 year olds running it! And so i got a lemonade :D. I forgot my camera, which was so so sad! :( but yeah it was so cute.
I made the mistake of wearing jeans to school today, because I was scared they would get cross with me for having shorts to short on my first day. But i died. it is SO BLOODY HOT HERE. Tomorrow I am wearing shorts. Even if they are too short. Lots of people wear short shorts that are shorter than mine though so it should be fine.
Yes so that was my day. :) So it is 7:20 here now and 1:20 am there!hahaha. I havent been feeling jetlagged! Jane has slept an unbelievble amount. On saturday I went to bed at 9, and last night at 10, so yea it hasnt really affected me, thank goodness.
Ah i love you all so much.xxxxxxxxx

9/11. We did go into town.
After having a delicious breakfast of crepes with nutella, cream, strawberries, blueberries and rasberries, I went with Jane, Jeffrey(her dad), Emma (her sister) and Sophie (my younger sisteer) to the Mount Vernon.
Well we didnt get there as the traffic to get to the pentagon was so bad because of the cermony there. So it was actually really fun as we got to drive aournd and see most of DC's sights. So beautiful! So today I have been in Maryland, DC and Virginia.
We went to Starbucks (AAAAAH) and to Einstein Bagels (which were absolutely delicious delicious delicious!). And then went to a community pool to swim because it is so bloody hot.
The community pool was like in movies! with slides and diving boards and stuff. Very fun.
About to go to the Balkind's for tea.

First night.
Cant believe I have been here less than 12 hours! It feels liks so much longer. My family is abolutely amazing to me, they give me all the space I need, and are very relaxed. The mom is so helpful and willing to help me with anything!
I landed at 12, midday, as the flight was delayed. Edith was waiting for me with Jeffrey and Emma and Susan. So nice! I went to the house (which i am now going to call home) and had a shower and lunch. Then i went to watch Sarah's volleyball tournament. So i watched that for like 1 and a half hours, which was awesome. I wish we had volleyball here, it looks so fun.
When we got home, we went on a walk through the woods, which was ahsome! :D
Then some family friends came over, who were so cool! So friendly, so keen and warm!
Such a fun day.
So tired which is why i am writing so disjointedly.
BUT it has been so so so fun. HOW WAS THE FASHION SHOW?
Very hot here. and humid.
I have my own room plus en suite bathroom, which is cool.
I feel like i am saying cool and awesome a lot.
Ah i am so tired. Had a fairly busy day actrually! On like 5 hours sleep AND jetlagged.
Ugh im not making sense. goodniiight

Leaving Tomorrow
So my aunt gave me this fantatastic idea of keeping a blog while i am in Washington DC. :)
I am going to DC for a month on an exchange type thing :).
I leave TOMORROW. I am so terrified. I always like to have everything planned out exactly, and it scares me so much that I dont know what is waiting for me. It freaks me out.
I have almost finished packing which is exciting.. waaaa. I am going to try update this everyday, (well maybe not EVERY day, but close enough) so that all of you (yes it is like two people) can see what I am up to. :) so yes.
